Apple brought a major breakthrough in mobile chipsets by introducing the world’s first 7nm chipset in the form of A12 Bionic which easily outscored Snapdragon 845 and is in close competition with Qualcomm’s latest SD855.
If a report from DigiTimes is to be believed, Apple will further demonstrate its command in mobile chipsets by using the world’s first chipsets built on a 5-nanometer architecture that will be manufactured by TSMC in 2020 iPhones.
DigiTimes’ report reads:
“TSMC is expected to secure the first 5nm chip orders from Apple for the 2020 iPhones, [according to sources] … Despite its dim business and industry outlook this year, TSMC claimed it is making progress in the development of sub-7nm process technologies with plans to move a newer 5nm EUV process to volume production by 2020 well on track.”
Decreasing the size of dye on which chipsets are made does not necessarily mean a performance boost, but the miniaturization would allow fitting in of more transistorswhich can significantly improve the performance.
Apple’s A12 Bionic, which is used in iPhone Xs, Xs Max, and Xr, currently features 6.9 billion transistors. However,2019 iPhones will still carry 7nm chips manufactured by TSMC.
The upcoming A13 chipsets are expected to bring considerable performance upgrades owing to new processes involving extreme ultraviolet lithography (EUV) that facilitates much more detailed microscopic patterns on chips.
