Google Bans Cryptocurrency Mining Apps On Play Store

After Apple recently imposed a ban on cryptocurrency mining apps, Google is the next in line to take a toll on such apps. The search giant has updated the Play Store Developer Policy to reflect that latest changes.

“We don’t allow apps that mine cryptocurrency on devices. We permit apps that remotely manage the mining of cryptocurrency,” reads the updated policy.

While mining cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Moneo, etc. has become the new fashion, the not-so-capable hardware of smartphones isn’t the best choice for sucking these virtual currencies. Many cryptocurrency mining apps are living on the Play Store. Some of them aren’t harmful, but the concern is the existence of the apps that hide the mining code and perform cryptojacking.

As a part of the update, Google has banned apps with repetitive content, providing an experience similar to other apps. For example, developers copying content from others or creating multiple apps with similar content and user experience.

If an automated tool, wizard service creates an app, Google will only accept the app when it’s submitted by an individually registered developer account of the user of the automated tool.

Also, Google won’t allows apps that are solely made for advertising purposes. For instance, the ones throwing ads on almost every user action including taps or swipes.
