Earlier this morning a low-quality version of the fourth episode of Game of Thrones’ seventh season was posted online and made free to download. The episode’s watermark, as well as several unnamed sources familiar with the incident, confirm that it originated from an HBO distribution partner and not from a group of anonymous hackers.
Hackers broke into HBO’s systems and reportedly stole 1.5 terabytes of data, including scripts for upcoming Game of Thrones episodes and two unreleased episodes of Ballers and Room 10.
In the letter, the hackers have demanded a multi-million ransom from the network to prevent the release of complete TV series and other information. They’ve claimed that HBO is their 17th hacking target and only 3 of them have failed to pay.
"Our demand is clear and Non-Negotiable: We want XXXX dollars to stop leaking your Data," the letter reads. "HBO spends 12 million for Market Research and 5 million for GOT7 advertisements. So consider us another budget for your advertisements!"said by the hacker.
