The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has scotched rumours that fake 10-rupee coins are in circulation and asked people not to give in to such canards.

“Nothing of that kind has happened. We have not even thought of it,” RBI spokesperson Alpana Kilawala said. “People should not hesitate in using the coins for transactions as these coins are legal tender.”

“I have a habit of saving coins in my daughter’s kiddy bank. We have around 250 coins in it. No one is accepting the coins without Rupee symbol saying it was a fake coin and the RBI had banned it. Some shopkeepers are showing an image differentiating fake and original coins,”said K. Brahmaiah, a resident of Guntur.

In July 2016, some shopkeepers in India were reported rejecting to accept the 10 coin it outrightly . The whole confusion was known to be caused by a rumor circulating on the social media.The chaos was later known to be created by circulation of a fake version of the 10 coin, which had 15 notches in design on the obverse instead of the actual coin's 10 notches. but later came to know that this coin is not fake.
