CCleaner Security App Has Been Hacked With 2.3 Million Infected

 
                                           Many users download CClearner app to protect their system from malware attacks installed in Windows and Anroid devices. Users of Avast-owned security application CCleaner for Windows have been advised to update their software immediately, after researchers discovered criminal hackers had installed a backdoor in the tool CCleaner 5.33.6162 and CCleaner Cloud.

 The researchers discovered the threat on September 13 after CCleaner 5.33 caused Talos systems to flag malicious activity.The malware would send encrypted information about the infected computer - the name of the computer, installed software and running processes - back to the hackers' server.


Paul Yung, vice president of product at Piriform, wrote in a post  on Monday "Based on further analysis, we found that the 5.33.6162 version of CCleaner and the 1.07.3191 version of CCleaner Cloud was illegally modified before it was released to the public, and we started an investigation process.

A two-stage backdoor was inserted in the CCleaner.exe binary which was capable of remote code execution after receiving commands from a remote IP. 

 Besides that, it collected the following information about the local system : Name of the computer , List of installed software, including Windows updates , List of running processes, MAC addresses of first three network adapters , Additional information whether the process is running with administrator privileges, whether it is a 64-bit system, etc.

 
For all other users, if you have not already done so, we encourage you to update your CCleaner software to version 5.34 or higher, the latest version is available for download

According to Piriform, around 2.27 million users might have installed the infected version of the CCleaner software, a spokesperson told TechCrunch.
